Handling Service Aviation Radio Data Communication Service

A lifeline of information connecting the sky and the ground with reliable data communications

The highly safe and punctual operation of aircraft is supported by fast and accurate communications. In Japan’s airspace, our “aviation radio data communications” is almost solely responsible for this role.
It all began in 1989. As the digitalization of aircraft was just beginning, Avicom Japan and this service began in order to promote the automation of communications with aircraft, which had previously been done manually.
Since then, we have made communication quality the top priority as the lifeline of information, while updating ourselves to keep up with the times and evolving to meet increasingly sophisticated and diverse needs, in pursuit of contributing to the aviation industry and society through data communications between the air and ground.

Connects Aircraft Communication Devices to Computers at Airlines and the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism to Send and Receive Data

“Aviation Radio Data Communications” is an aviation communications system that sends and receives data by networking the communications equipment (VHF) installed on aircraft. It communicates with the computers of airlines, the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism, and other related organizations. Utilizing a nationwide network consisting of the Avicom Center, the core facility of the service, and more than 60 radio stations (RGS/VGS), we provide a wide range of information and communications infrastructure necessary for aircraft operation.

Image
ACARS
Aircraft Communication Addressing and Reporting System
This system transmits and receives flight-related data between aircraft and ground systems via wireless communication.
VDL
VHF Digital Link
It is a dedicated data communication system standardized by ICAO (International Civil Aviation Organization), and enables faster and more reliable communication than the current ACARS system.
RGS/VGS
Remote Ground Station/VDL Ground Station
This is a radio station that relays and manages data communications between aircraft and ground control centers, enabling the transmission and reception of flight data and navigation information in real time. RGS supports ACARS, and VGS supports VDL.

Avicom Center

It is a core data center in Japan with an advanced monitoring system and a thorough backup system. We have a system in place that allows us to always be in contact with all related organizations that use our services.

24-hour Monitoring of Operation Status

It relays and monitors data communications between aircraft and the ground 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.

A Thorough Backup System

All equipment is made redundant, allowing us to provide services with minimal impact even in the unlikely event that a malfunction occurs in any of the equipment in use.

Coverage Area and Ground Stations

“Aviation radio data communications,” which exchanges ever-changing information between aircraft and the ground, is essential for safe and efficient flight operations. Communications include the ones from the ground to the aircraft (uplink) and the ones from the aircraft to the ground (downlink), and much of the communications shown in the diagram below is automated.
This system allows for the rapid and accurate transmission of important information throughout the entire process, from pre-departure, takeoff, in-flight, and landing, supporting appropriate responses according to the situation. It also makes it possible to share the status of aircraft in flight with ground mechanics and manufacturers in a timely manner, contributing to the efficiency of maintenance work.
